Study for Untitled VI
baritone saxophone and percussion: vibraphone and gong
dur: 7:30
Shadow of My Former Self is a collection of works exploring questions of identity, story and personal history under the self-secluding name Untitled.
In Study for Untitled VI, I used digital recordings of saxophone multiphonics from my Untitled VII, and of vibraphone multiphonics recently discovered by Michael Edward Edgerton and Olaf Tzschoppe. I analyzed each of these and created a series of generative sonic events where the overtones of one instrument’s multiphonic became the fundamental of the other instrument’s next multiphonic. The analysis, deconstruction, and regeneration of these sounds, and the renewal of my past music in my present music is an attempt to create something new from the ashes of the troubled past that defines me, and that I carry with me in the present, that others do not see.
Study for Untitled VI was written for Carlos Tena González and David Moliner in 2022, made possible by NODUS 2022, Fundacioó Caixa Castelloó and l’Ajuntament de les Coves de Vinromà.
