Serenade

flute, violin and viola
dur: 14:00

Serenade (2024) for flute, violin and viola was written to be premiered and recorded in an Italian castle. It imagines that if we listen carefully in that castle, we can still hear the past. Sound emerges from ether, coalescing into a swirl of echoes and fragments from the numerous musical celebrations that took place across the centuries. In the same way that enduring historical furnishings, paintings, and artifacts transport us across eras, Serenade connects us with our predecessors, to times when no recordings existed. It reminds us that music was and is still made by people in the moment, ephemeral, precious, sacred, and meant to be shared. Serenade was written in 2024 for flutist Jennifer Grim, violinist Bettina Mussumeli, and violist Jodi Levitz, for their Serenade project.
