Entwined

Clarinet and Alto Saxophone
Duration: 9 minutes
Subito Music Distribution

Entwined (2015) explores the strong relationship between clarinet and saxophone.  Many performers double on these two instruments, the range is shared, and the colors are complementary.  In Entwined, two main ideas occur. The first focuses on the similarities between the instruments. Pulsing unisons in rising registers alternate between composite colors and moments when each instrument’s unique colors and overtones emerge. In the second idea, independent, imitative motives and lines showcase each instrument’s flexibility and virtuosity, creating layers of counterpoint that are constantly regenerated from one instrument to the other. Entwined was written for Margaret Donaghue Flavin and Dale Underwood.
