PROGRAM NOTES
Untitled VIII was written for the Amorsima Trio, and completed in January 2025. My Untitled series (2018-present) privately deconstructs, interrogates, and recomposes my past identities to create strikingly new concert music. My creative process begins by digitally processing personally significant sounds or previous works in metaphorical ways. These might include using echo for memory; reverb for distance; stretching for pleasant associations; distortions, compressions and erosions for more painful ones. I analyze the inner timbres and temporal aspects of these transformed sounds, then blend, shape, and recompose them into new digital compositions. Lastly, the digital composition serves as a sonic model for a new piece for living musicians. In this way, I put forth the shape of something deeply personal, twice removed from the original: a musical shadow addressing the past that defines me, that I carry with me in the present. Under the self-secluding name “Untitled”, the works remain fully open for the listener to interpret as they will. In Untitled VIII, a past work in its entirety has been transformed, rising again like a Phoenix from the ashes.
